In Memoriam

CanElson lost two very important people in 2009, Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman and Henry Lawrie. Both were Directors and advisors to the CanElson team.

Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman (April 22, 1922 to January 11, 2009)

Doc was one of the founding shareholders of CanElson/EMR Drilling. His knowledge of drilling and the oilpatch, gained by more than 60 years in the industry, was an invaluable resource as the Company developed its initial business plan. Doc was also a founder and integral part of Tetonka Drilling Inc. and Western Lakota Energy Services Inc., two of management’s previous drilling companies.

Doc was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. He became one of Alberta’s most successful oilmen and industrialists through his company, Bow Valley Industries, and many other ventures. He was among the first wave of adventurous oilmen who pioneered the industry after the Second World War. Doc was also a decorated war pilot - earning a Government of France citation for bravery; an original Calgary Flames owner and key player in building the Saddledome and bringing the 1988 Olympics to Calgary; and, most proudly, a generous philanthropist.

Henry Richardson Lawrie (January 2, 1938 – November 7, 2009)

Henry was a member of the CanElson Board of Directors, and Chair of the Audit Committee. His keen eye and acute knowledge of accounting rules were greatly admired and appreciated by CanElson management.

Henry was born in Calgary and began his professional career with the local accounting firm Henderson, Waines and Anderson. He received his CA in 1960, his FCA in 1979 and his CPA (Texas) in 1980. From 1962 until his retirement in 1997, he worked for Price Waterhouse, serving in offices in Calgary, Toronto and Dallas. He was the managing partner in Calgary from 1992 to 1997. Following retirement from Price Waterhouse, he was Chief Accountant for the Alberta Securities Commission. In 2002 he was an analyst with the Ross Smith Energy Group. Since 2005 he has served as a Director for several public Canadian companies, including Western Lakota Energy Services Inc., while continuing as an analyst with Ross Smith.

Doc and Henry will both be sadly missed by the management and staff at CanElson. We strive to accomplish a little of what they both did in their long and successful careers and lives.
